Failing To Learn

Sen. Trent Lott is the No. 2 man in the new Republican Senate minority, proving that the Republican leadership has failed to learn from their recent loss.

Sen. Lott’s defenses for porkbarrel spending and his ties to the K-Street politics as usual crowd all send the wrong message to the American electorate. The Republican Senate badly needs new leadership, not the sort of smarmy political operative aspects that Sen. Lott has come to represent. This decision sends exactly the wrong message, and if the GOP wants to regain the majority, they cannot do so by embracing those things which led them to lose in the first place.

  1. Since all my comments are moderated here, you can visit my friendlier blog. The only people who visit are my friends, actually, so I don’t moderate things. You are welcome, if you want.

  2. Yeah, what’s the point of comment moderation anyway? If Jay wants every commenter to flee his blog and never come back, he should keep this up.

  3. Comment moderation is practiced at many sites. DemocraticUnderground.org comes to mind immediately, but they do state in their rules of use section about banning you for writing anything postive about GW Bush, the republican party, etc.

  4. Comment moderation is practiced at many sites.

Perhaps, but usually that’s limited to spam filtering; not the wholesale suppression of any argument Jay doesn’t have the time to refute. That’s a little ridiculous.

    Never heard of them.

Well, I just finished reading their fairly extensive forum rules, and I didn’t see anything like that at all. Which makes you a liar, I guess.

  5. Erica–This blog was founded on the lofty aims of searching for truth and a rigorous debate of ideas. As long as Rush Limbaugh agrees with those ideas.

Lott–Guess we can put to rest any notions that the GOP is the party of racist white Southerners…

The comment system underwent an upgrade last night to fix the problem with the moderation queue.

Given that I haven’t listened to his show for years now, I wouldn’t know.

Given the way in which you two “argue”, I wouldn’t be so quick to complain. Given that you are guests here, it would do you both well to comport yourselves with more respect for the owner of this site and other guests.

  7. Given the way in which you two “argue”, I wouldn’t be so quick to complain.

What, it’s not sufficient for you to simply stealth-ban people and block their posts; you have to lie about what they contain, too? The simple truth is that when arguments are presented that you don’t have a response for, that argument has a funny way of sliding right off your little vanity blog.

Given that you are guests here, it would do you both well to comport yourselves with more respect for the owner of this site and other guests.

I know when I have guests in my home, I don’t usually gag and muzzle them. For all you admonish us about being guests you might work a little harder to be a better host. And why is it that only the liberal “guests” are admonished to treat others with respect, but conservatives get to call liberals all the names they like? I’m not complaining; just pointing out how you’re a hypocrite.

  8. The guy that calls me a second-rate troll doesn’t get to lecture me on manners and respect. I’d be more than happy to tone it down. I’ve asked you to do so several times. But respect is something that is earned, not acquired because you have a website, and I’ve never done anything to you that you haven’t done to me several times.

So either boot me or quit whining about problems that you create.

    You guess wrong.

    Check the links.

    http://www.democraticunderground.org/
http://www.democraticunderground.com/forums/rules_detailed.html – “Who is Welcome on Democratic Underground, and Who is Not

Democratic Underground is an online community for Democrats and other progressives. Members are expected to be generally supportive of progressive ideals, and to support Democratic candidates for political office.

We ban conservative disruptors who are opposed to the broad goals of this website. If you think overall that George W. Bush is doing a swell job, or if you wish to see Republicans win, or if you are generally supportive of conservative ideals, please do not register to post, as you will likely be banned.”

  10. I think you’re reading a little too much into it, Z. Anyway, who cares? Like I said I’ve never heard of “Democratic underground”, or whatever. Sounds like a bunch of pretentious assholes. Surely you have a more compelling argument than this clumsy guilt-by-nonassociation?

  11. ERica,

Because you haven’t heard of it, it doesn’t exit? Sucking up too much insectide at Monsanto?

Anyway I gave the link to one of your sites that states that they do moderate blogs (and the specific verbiage from their rules of use).

“Sounds like a bunch of pretentious assholes” – Takes one to know one I guess.

  12. Because you haven’t heard of it, it doesn’t exit?

It doesn’t what? I’ve got no idea what you’re talking about.
