Iraq Stabilization Symposium

Glenn Reynolds has invited bloggers to give some opinion on what we should do to stabilize Iraq. Some of the options are quite interesting.

What many in the foreign policy establishment have only belatedly latched on to is that this is a regional war. We now have proof positive that the Iranians have been arming death squads in Iraq, and the Syrian connections to the insurgency have been known for some time now. The Baker tack of trying to negotiate with powers that have every intention of tearing Iraq apart is simply naïve. The Iranians and the Syrians have no interest in a stable, strong and democratic Iraq. If Iraq becomes democratic, it increases the pressure on their regime to enact reform. That is the very last thing that they want.

We’re in the middle of a regional war, whether we like it or not, and we need a regional solution to this conflict. It’s unfortunate that a group of bloggers seem to be displaying more flexibility and ingenuity than our policymakers are — then again, perhaps that shouldn’t be much of a surprise.
