I will always remember one of Gen. Norman Schwartkopf’s final Desert Storm news conferences:
Behind him was large map, with large markers designating the various Coalition formations and their respective locations in Iraq as well as their Iraqi counterparts.
One reporter ask Schwartzkopf “Who’s that over to the far left?” indicating a marker over toward the area of Syria and Jordan, far away from any of the Iraqi markers.
The exchange that follows went like this:
General : “The French”
Reporter: “What are they doing over there?”
Gerneral: “They’re protecting our left flank”
Reporter: “From whom?”
General: Smiling, “They’re protecting our left flank”.
