To The Gates Of Hell!

McCain got the best line of last night’s debate, although he seemed a little too pleased with himself for it. McCain for President of Sparta?

Consider that your moment of zen, and this your open thread…

  1. “The Democrats tried to go all in when they didn’t have the cards. It was a politically idiotic thing to do.”

Once again, your analysis is the absolute opposite of reality. The Democrats can now say they did everything they could to appease their base, but that Bush obstructed them and the will of the American…..meaning “it is more important than ever that we elect a Democratic President and grow the ranks of the Democratic Congressional majority”. Politically, it was better for Democrats to “lose” this fight….particularly since this war isn’t gonna be any more popular next year at this time. You’re right that the Dems would lose the PR battle if they attempted to withhold funds for the troops….which is why they’ll grudgingly admit defeat, let Bush have what he wants (even more ownership of the war), and use it as a dagger to bludgeon an even less popular GOP in the spring and summer of 2008.

“Actually, there are some winners in all of this: al-Qaeda and Iran get the benefit of seeing their primary nemesis caught up in political backfighting while they continue to bleed Iraq dry.”

So the whole idea of democracy should go the way of woolly mammoth during wartime lest the executive branch’s foreign policy be challenged and thus “emboldens the enemy”. If this is your idea of democracy, why didn’t we just leave Saddam in power since he shared your values on the moral bankruptcy of challenging El Presidente?

“From what I saw, I was quite impressed with Romney’s performance. He’s the only one who seemed to be poised throughout the whole thing.”

Romney’s articulate and looks Presidential, but he’s pretty damn slippery, a fact that was actually reinforced by his too-slick-by-half responses to questions about social issues in the debate.

“Mike Huckabee did a good job, even though he has almost zero chance of actually getting the nomination.”

And the GOP will be kicking themselves if they lose in 18 months because Huckabee is the one candidate solid enough and likeable enough to beat any Democrat.

“I do agree that there was a winner in last night’s debate — Fred Thompson. Why bother fighting for attention among 10 candidates when you can wait until the field winnows down?”

Well, there is this issue about fundraising….and the fact that every top-tier candidate now has a $20 million heart start on him. If Thompson plans to get in, he can’t wait until fall as Wesley Clark did in 2003 and Bill Clinton did in 1991. The rules of the game have changed, and if Thompson fails to realize that in the next month or two, he’ll be unable to advance his message in what now amounts to a national primary over the course of two weeks in late January and early February of election year.

“The more I think about it, the more I think Giuliani torpedoed himself.”

Didn’t I tell you this Giuliani guy was all hat and no cattle? Surprise, surprise. I was right again.

  2. “They didn’t get their “New Direction for America” passed. They didn’t get their “Six for 06″ agenda passed”

They pushed everything through within the first 100 hours. What bullet point from those cheesy plans did they not get to cross off?

The part about actually getting them made into law. None of them have even gotten the the White House for signature or veto yet.

It doesn’t count if you can’t actually get the bills made into law…

  4. Yes, and I’m sure that the failure of final passage for the wildly popular initiatives of “Six in ’06” and “New Direction for America” will be blamed on the Congress who did their job passing them in 100 hours, not on the President with a 28% approval rating.

Perhaps, but the Democrats can’t complain that they don’t have their acts together enough to get the bills to the President’s desk for signature…
