Understanding the Culture War

Policy Review has an interesting article on the conflict between Tocqueville and Gramsci in America. If you’ve never heard of Gramsci (I hadn’t until reading the article), it’s interesting to see where a lot of the ideas of the Left have come from, as well as how widely accepted they are. These anti-democratic ideals of oppression and "false consciousness" are a direct challenge to the foundations of American society and deserve to be exposed for the intellectual shams that they are. (A warning, the article is pretty heavy reading…) (John Fonte, also has another great article on the same subject that also helps shed a light on this phenomenon.)
