There’s been a lot of discussion over the protective steel tariffs imposed by the Bush administration in conservative and Republican circles. The fact is, these protectionist measures are just flat-out wrong, and will only hurt the steel industry. George Will makes the excellent point that the tariff decision puts politics over policy, which is never a healthy thing to do. While I’ve always given the Bush administration high marks, this latest move is neither compassionate, nor conservative, and Bush would be wise to admit his mistake and repeal these measures which would harm the interests of free trade and economic growth.
