Former Congressman Bill Janklow has been sentenced to 100 days in jail for his manslaughter conviction. FoxNews has more details on the sentencing. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a slap on the wrist. Were I the judge in this case I would have given him a minimum of a year in prison just to make a point. Representatives are not immune from the law, and just because you’re in Congress it doesn’t mean that you’re shielded from punishment.
Of course with his political career indisputably over, and the inevitable civil suit draining his finances, Bill Janklow won’t exactly be getting off easy even if he’s unlikely to spend much time in jail.
At least we agree that this was a slap on the wrist. If a guy had been caught running a stop sign before, and killed someone later at that same intersection by running that stop sign, I’d certainly consider 100 days a slap on the wrist, rich, influential defendant or not. Justice blind? Someone else did that and they’d probably pull at least 5 behind bars.
