The Australian is reporting a rumor that al-Qaeda No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahiri may have been killed in fighting near Wana, Pakistan. The rumor is that US Special Forces shot Zawahiri as he tried to flee, but are deferring the official announcement until DNA tests return and in deference to the Pakistanis.
Zawahiri is one of the “brains” behind al-Qaeda, responsible for thousands of deaths worldwide. His death would make the world significantly safer.
