Dick Morris writes that Bill Clinton is trying to suck the oxygen from the Kerry campaign with the timing of his memoirs. Morris is wrong on these things more often than not, but something tells me his stopped clock is right this hour.
The timing of Clinton’s book couldn’t be worse. It’s guranteed a glut of media attention at the exact time Kerry needs to get a major boost from his campaign. In fact, the entire general election seems weighted against Kerry – Bill Clinton’s book comes out right before the Democratic National Convention in Boston. Immediately after that is the Olympics, which will take much of the press out of the campaign. After that Bush gets his post-convention bounce, then the anniversary of September 11 is likely to give Bush another bounce.
Unless Kerry can get on message before then or has a very good endgame before November 2nd, he’s going to be even more trouble than he is now. While it’s far too early to call the Kerry campaign DOA, it’s not too early to predict that he’s going to have a long, hot summer trying to get a word in edgewise as The Bill Show moves across the country like a plains tornado.
