Quashing rumors, former coach Mike Ditka has decided not to run for the Senate in Illinois – meaning that the likely Democratic pickup in that state has become even more likely.
A Ditka candidacy sounds great on paper, but I think Ditka’s explanation is an example of one knowing one’s limitations. Celebrity candidates may have flash, but the Senate is not a place for someone like Ditka who wants to get things done. It’s a deliberative and collegial body, and that’s not the sort of place a football coach would find attractive. Someone like Ditka would be far better suited toi the executive branch rather than the legislative. Executives can get things done, while legislators have to cajole and debate.
Now, Governor Ditka, on the other hand, that might yet work out…
Isn’t it funny how the Republican Party pulls in thousands of dollars in campaign contributions denigrating the “moral sewer” of our celebrity culture, but the only way they seem to be able to win races in by running celebrity candidates. Despite the ones they’ve already run (Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sonny Bono, Fred Grandy), they’re constantly twisting the arms of other celebrity Republicans (who happen to be among the worst filth peddlers in the business) such as Dennis Miller, Bo Derek, Kelsey Grammer, and now, Mike Ditka. Just goes to prove that for every carved in stone Republican position, there’s a glaringly obvious contradiction to negate it.
