Former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has
accepted a position as Ariel Sharon’s Foreign Minister. Netanyahu replaces Shimon Peres, a supporter of the disastrous Oslo accords.
This also works to Mr. Netanyahu’s advantage, as he is looking to challenge Sharon for leadership of Israel. Given the popularity of Netanyahu and the fact that he’s considerably more telegenic, well-spoken, and erudite than Sharon he would likely win a primary election between the two. A position in Sharon’s cabinet gets him back into the political spotlight in advance of any such move.
The recent shakeup in the Israeli cabinet means that Yassir Arafat would be wise to start packing his bags. The next time Israeli tanks head up to his Mutkata complex, they will come with the intention to remove Yassir Arafat. There will not be a quick few demolitions and a pullout in a matter of days.
Unfortunately, this is what must be done. If there is ever to be peace in the region, the Palestinian uprising must end. It would be preferable for the Palestinians to see the futility of conflict, but that option doesn’t appear to be likely. Therefore, Israel must exercise its right to maintain its security. The Palestinians are acting like a massive terrorist group, and they will soon get the treatment that their actions deserve.
The Palestinians have every right to behave like a terrorist group… if you had your homeland stolen from you by Jewish invaders, you would too.
“It would be preferable for the Palestinians to see the futility of the conflict…”
Maybe George Washington should have seen the futility of fighting the British? Maybe Lincoln should have seen the futility of fighting the Confederacy? Maybe Churchill should have seen the futility of fighting the Nazis? I could keep going all day with everything that is wrong with that statement…
Their actions and resistance in the face of Israeli opression should be lauded, not punished.
