A Swiss lab has
concluded that the last Osama bin Laden tape is a fake. As I had thought, the audio quality of the tape would make it difficult to use computer waveform analysis to verify the voice on the tape – which is exactly what you’d want to do if you were faking a tape of bin Laden’s voice. It wouldn’t be hard for al-Qaeda to find or train someone to impersonate bin Laden’s speech patterns and mannerisms while ensuring that the audio is of poor quality to confuse attempts at analysis.
Until there’s some kind of conclusive proof that bin Laden is alive, any reports or tape should be taken with a grain of salt.
