The Next Majority Leader?

The WaPo is indicating that Senator Bill Frist of Tennessee may replace Trent Lott as Majority Leader in the Republican Senate. Sen. Don Nickles, who was the favorite to replace Lott in an ouster is rumored to be supporting Frist for the position instead.

This is very good news for the GOP if it pans out. While Nickles has stronger conservative ties, Frist is a more appealing spokesperson for the rest of America. He was a voice of reason during the anthrax attacks, and he’s telegenic and well-spoken. The GOP need someone who can reach out to Americans of all stripes and be a forceful and eloquent spokesperson for the GOP’s agenda. Frist is just such a man, and if he becomes the Majority Leader it will be a positive move for the national image of the Republican Party.
