Dictatorial Dialogue

The North Koreans are threatening to "turn the citadel of imperialists into a sea of fire.”". The citadel of imperialists being the United States of course.

This raises a question: who is it that writes this crap? Turning the citadel of imperialists into a sea of fire? It sounds like something that would come from the mustache-twirling villian of a bad space opera. I can almost picture Kim Jung Il sitting on some large leather chair and petting his white cat. I know it’s supposed to be a sinister threat, but it comes off sounding idiotic.

Going from the silly to the more serious, it’s clear that the DPRK is starting to yank on the United State’s chain more and more. Which means that more people are going to say that we should act in North Korea rather than Iraq. (Not that they’d ever support using force in North Korea.) Of course, it’s entirely possible that seeing lines of US tanks rolling into Baghdad might serve as a not-so-subtle reminder to the Koreans to keep in line.

In any event, something is going to have to be done about North Korea’s weapons program. It’s looking less and less like Kim Jung Il is serious about negotiating with the US or anyone else for that matter. If so, our options go from bad to horrendous. It’s likely that the North Koreans just might lob a nuke at Seoul if things got out of hand.

At that point, we will likely be very glad that President Bush pulled out of the 1972 ABM treaty…
