Since I’ve been on a flurry of criticism towards France, I thought it would be only fair to mention that France is now supporting lifting UN sanctions on Iraq. The French ambassador to the UN, Jean-Marc de la Sabliere has stated that sanctions should be lifted even without further UN weapons inspections under Hans Blix and UNSCOM. The people of Iraq need medical supplies and technology to rebuild their infrastructure, and the lifting of sanctions will help alleviate the suffering of the Iraqi people after decades of dictatorship. The French position is correct – these sanctions should be lifted immediately.
