NASA has confirmed that tests have shown that insulating foam could have caused the hull breech that doomed the space shuttle Columbia. A test involving shooting a piece of foam weighing less than two pounds at a fiberglass replica of the Shuttle’s wing. The test shows that a 22-inch long opening resulted, ranging in size from a dime to a quarter – more than large enough to let in superheated plasma and doom the orbiter.
