Iowa Senator Tom Harkin, one of the liberal standard-bearers of the Senate with the passing of Paul Wellstone, is set to endorse Dean today.
This is a major blow to Gephardt, as Harkin holds considerable sway over the Iowa Democratic establishment and could easily ensure a Dean win in the Iowa Caucuses. If Dean continues with this level of momentum, it could mean that Dean has the nomination all but locked up unless Clark is able to pull ahead in South Carolina and lock up some of the key states in the Super Tuesday primary.
UPDATE: It’s now official – Harkin is speaking now. Nothing surprising here, just more stale class warfare rhetoric and typical liberal Democrat boilerplate.
