Spare me. This is a Republican fabrication. A Weapon of Mass Distraction from George W Bush’s apalling record in the military and as a President.
I have yet to get the feeling that it was his jump the shark moment; not the way the Wellstone memorial was for Senate Democrats in 2002, nor the way the “George Bush is not my neighbor” (and NOT “yeaaggh”) was for Dean.
I do think this will ensure that Kerry will be behind pretty much all the way until his VP selection though. And I have no doubt that similar gaffes are going to come. I am not exactly sure how, but George W. Bush has an uncanny knack for making his political opponents lose their minds.
