Happy Bastille Day!

Yes, it’s Bastille Day, and what better way to celebrate than by having foreign troops marching down the Champs-Elysees?

Of course, it wouldn’t be Bastille Day without my annual posting of Edmund Burke’s Reflections on the Revolution in France. Remember that while the American revolution produced a government that has lasted for 228 years and produced the world’s premiere superpower, within a decade the French Revolution went from Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité to the Reign of Terror, the abolition of religion, and bread riots in Paris.

Burke’s warning is as prescient today as it was then – those revolutionary ideologies that wish to sweep away the social order, abandon religion, and alter society by fiat inevitably lead to destruction and oppression.

  1. “sweep away the social order, abandon religion, and alter society by fiat”…that sounds like a perfect description of modern liberalism…!

  2. Yes, and reimposing a stifling social order, condemning all religions but one (okay, two), and altering society by fiat is a much better policy… but I think the “conservatives” speak for themselves…
