SD Polling Update

I just got back from voting, and the streets of Sioux Falls are packed. Even at 8 in the morning, there are lines at the polls. It’s looking like turnout will be high.

Nothing of note in regards to procedures. I was asked for ID, as was everyone else. The entrance to the polling place was festooned with various campaign signs, as is every available spot of lawn in the city. With luck, voting across the state will be so efficient…

  1. What kind of voting machine/mechanism did you use? In Germany, there are only paper ballots. You make a mark in the circle next to your candidate, just like in a multiple choice test. (Ok, there are very few places where the process is computerized, but it is basically the same principle.)

So what system did you get to use? Punch-cards (are you collecting chad)? Lever pulling monsters?

  2. I just voted (I was one of those “undecideds” who broke for Kerry). In my small town, I waited five minutes to vote. The line is likely to get longer in the hours to come.

Janek, in my precinct, we get a paper ballot and simply draw a line to our candidate of choice. It works for me. I wish all precincts used such a simple ballot rather than those noxious punch cards and hacker-prone voting machines. If voting machine systems fail on us today in places like Florida, God help us.
