Safe Computing

Cryptography guru Bruce Schneier says that the best advice for safe computing is don’t use Windows.

Well duh.

Yes, I know, everyone says that 90% of the computing world uses Windows. I say, if 90% of the world jumped off a cliff, would you do it too?

After only two months with my little iBook, I’m sold on the Apple platform. I’ve never had a machine that just worked like the Apple does, and I’ve built more computers than some manufacturers. The secret is OS X. Never before have I used an operating system that was so well thought out. I’m a code monkey, but I like having a responsive and flexible GUI. My Mac gives me a very powerful UNIX-based system so I can use all my UNIX tools, but I can also run Photoshop and Dreamweaver with an equally powerful GUI. It’s truly the best of both worlds.

Then again, if Apple had the majority of the computer market, us Mac users couldn’t look down at the rest of the world with our smug self-superiority…

  1. Except a serviceable Wintel box is much cheaper than a Macintosh, and Windows is much more convenient for the lazy among us than Linux. So the cliff it is. 😛

  2. Right on, Nick. I put together an upper-midscale gaming PC for less than 500 dollars. And then I turned around and did it for my wife, too, so we can both play World of Warcraft together. So all in all I paid half of what a Mac would cost, and got two computers, to boot.

I love Macs, and I’ll always be a Mac fan, but they simply aren’t a solution for the economy-conscious, or for the gamer. If I ever need a laptop, though, it’ll be a Mac.

    And yes, I run Firefox.

Wouldn’t you at least ask why there were doing that, and see if maybe there was a benefit they had discovered that you had not?

  3. Oh, and another thing- install AdAware while you’re at it. That’ll take care of the spyware problem, as long as you update and scan on a regular basis. (I couldn’t believe how much of the junk was on my system…)
