Former Lebanese PM Assassinated

Rafik Hariri, the former Prime Minister of Lebanon was killed in a massive car bomb explosion in Beirut today. Hariri had recently joined the opposition against the Syrian military occupation of Lebanon. Hariri had fought against the extended tenure of Syrian-backed President Emile Lahoud in 2000.

Lebanon has been used as a puppet regime by Syria for some time, and this occupation has been virtually ignored by the rest of the world. (Although ironically enough, a Franco-American resolution demanding Syrian withdrawl had been passed by the UN last fall.) Syria’s illegal occupation of Lebanon and use of Lebanese territory for the training of Hizb’Allah and Islamic Jihad militants (among others) is a threat to the stability of the region and the world.
