There’s been a lot of talk about the new Prime Minister of France, Jean-Pierre Raffarin,
a political
oursider with free-market leanings. This could be a good sign for the French
people, who badly need basic market reforms to their stagnating welfare state.
The appointment of Raffarin seems like a step in that direction, as well as Chirac’s
way of getting the right together in advance of the parliamentary elections. Then
again, changing the French system is going to be a Herculean job.
