Eco-Nonsense

The WWF (not the rasslin’ kind, but the World Wildlife Federation) is now claiming that the Earth will run out of reasources by the year 2050. Said one WWF official:

A spokesman for WWF UK, said: "If all the people consumed natural resources at the same rate as the average US and UK citizen we would require at least two extra planets like Earth."

It appears that the WWF have taken the precautionary measure of already living on one of those other planets.

The evidence for these wild claims? The same shibboleths of the radical environmentalist movement, deforestation, greenhouse gasses, and endangered species. Of course, none of these have any relevance to the claim that we’re all fucked in fifty years.

This is nothing more than a blatant cry for attention when the world is focused on more pressing concerns. This is also cry for a neo-Luddite agrarian lifestyle that would leave millions dead. The fact is, if everyone had the standard of living that the US had, birth rates would slow as they have in all industrialized countries, and we’d see the kind of farming technology that makes the United States the world’s breadbasket radically increase the food-making potential of the rest of the world.

But according to the radical environmentalists, we all need to live like the average Botswanan. Well, if that’s such a wonderful lifestyle for the Earth, then I suggest they be the first to adopt it.

EDIT: Reader Janis Gore reminds me that the committee that published this report met in Bali. Oh, the suffering for their work that the environmentalists go through!

  1. This falls in nicely with last month’s news, when the attendees at the summit on world hunger in Rome ate lobster and foie gras.
