The idea of desktop video has always been a fascination, and now a group of amateurs has put together an original Star Trek episode using off-the-shelf hardware and software.
What makes it especially cool is despite the use of non-actors, it really seems to capture the essence of the original Star Trek better than any of the series that Paramount spends $2+ million an episode for. Yes, it’s got cheap-looking props, sometimes questionable acting, and decidely cheesy monsters – but so did the original Star Trek. What counts is the sense of adventure and exploration. (And vaporizing the red shirts.) It’s definitely worth a look to see how a group of amateurs can recreate the style and panache of the 1960’s Star Trek using 21st Century technology.
(Thanks to James Lileks for the heads-up on this one.)
