Vaclav Havel, the Czech playright and member of the Charter 77 human rights group who fought Communist oppression in Eastern Europe has given his farewell speech as the Czech Republic votes on his successor.
The BBC has
excerpts of the speech.
Havel is one of the most intreguing and brilliant minds in politics. His courage during Soviet occupation and his wisdom in leading the Czech people into the free market are without peer. Because of men like Havel, the Czech Republic is one of Eastern Europe’s biggest success stories. There could be little more fitting legacy to his political career than that.
