On Chris Matthew’s Hardball former General Wesley Clark said some intriguingly dumb things, but nothing dumber than this:
And I would say to the Europeans, I pledge to you as the American president that we’ll consult with you first. You get the right of first refusal on the security concerns that we have. We’ll bring you in. (Emphasis mine)
This is the most patently idiotic thing Clark has ever said, and that is saying a lot. In essence, Clark is saying that if terrorists attacked the United States, he would first ask Europe if it was right to strike back. If Europe says no, Clark will sacrifice American interests to other nations.
This kind of statement is unacceptable for a Commander-in-Chief. In esence, Clark is saying that Jacque Chirac will be in charge of US foreign policy. There’s a big difference between consulting with Europe and letting them run our policy. Bush consulted with Old Europe before Iraq and Old Europe told him to shove off. If Clark thinks that letting the Weasels run US foreign policy is even remotely prudent he needs his head checked. Such an attitude is not only dangerous, it goes against the oath Clark took as a general in the US military. A President has an obligation to uphold the US Constitution, not the whims of Old Europe. The fact that he’s so willing to subjugate the former to the latter shows why he is unfit to be Commander-in-Chief.
Ah yes… isn’t it funny how the same people who fear having our foreign policy made in Paris have no problem with having our social policy made in Rome? 😉
