The Messenger

Newsweek has a good piece in its Aug. 26 issue on the influence of Karen Hughes on the President’s message. Hughes left Washington last month, but is now working as a consultant to President Bush at the Western White House in Crawford, TX. Hughes is the one largely responsible for crafting Bush’s public image through his most difficult times – the 2000 election and post-Sept. 11. Her ability to help Bush connect with the common people is nothing short of extraordinary. While Karl Rove tends to policy issues, it’s Hughes who seems to set the image for the Bush Presidency. Her work is largely unregarded, but she is quite possibly the best GOP strategist since the late, great Lee Atwater.
